Meet Shivani – Our Inna Spirit Member of the Month for March

Some members are part of your story from the very beginning. Shivani is one of them.

She has been with Anna for 14 years — long before Inna Essence even opened its doors. Her loyalty, warmth and quiet strength make her a beautiful embodiment of what our community stands for.

A Doctor Who Took Her Own Advice

Shivani is a herbal medicine doctor and naturopath of 32 years, practising at Springwood Wellness Centre for the past 16 years. She has spent her life helping others heal — but 14 years ago, she faced her own health challenge.

She was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis.

“As a doctor, I know how quickly it can go downhill,” she shares.

A friend suggested she try Reformer Pilates. At the time, Shivani was a regular gym-goer — but she didn’t enjoy it. “I didn’t like doing it by myself,” she says. What she needed wasn’t just exercise. She needed support, guidance and connection. So she started Reformer.

Movement as Medicine

The first few years after her diagnosis were painful. Shivani had also previously taught yoga, but stopped after her diagnosis due to the severity of her symptoms.

Over time, something shifted. “Now, if I don’t do Pilates for a week, my joints get stiff.”

Three Reformer classes a week have become non-negotiable. She even underwent surgery for a meniscus tear in her right knee — but it was Pilates, not the surgery, that truly made the difference.

“My pain has improved greatly. Three days a week Reformer — and I have no knee pain at all. I can’t live without my Reformer.” Her commitment is unwavering. When her son suggested buying a home in the city, she responded honestly: “No — I can’t move away from Inna Essence.”

For the past 14 years, she has maintained only a minimal dose of arthritis medication. When she is consistent with Pilates, she doesn’t need to increase it. That’s not a coincidence. That’s lifestyle medicine.

The Emotional Shift

The physical benefits are powerful — but for Shivani, the emotional impact is just as significant.

When she travels overseas and misses her regular classes, she feels the difference quickly. “I feel weak. My mental health declines.”

Her morning classes set the tone for her entire day. “When I do my morning class, I’m happy the entire day.”

Rheumatoid Arthritis can significantly impact energy levels. Movement, paired with her professional understanding of supplementation and holistic health, helps her stay steady and strong.

Finding Clarity on the Mat

Alongside Reformer, Shivani deeply values YinYang Yoga and VinYin Yoga. “When you do yoga postures, you are looking after your entire body. You feel so relaxed.”

She particularly loves Karen’s classes, especially when the crystal bowls are played.

“I struggle to meditate on my own. But in Karen’s classes, I always find the answer. Every time I go, I work on one issue in my mind — and I leave with clarity.”

That’s the power of a regulated nervous system. When the body softens, the mind clears. Perspective returns.

A Safe Place for Everyone

One of the things Shivani loves most about Inna Essence is the diversity within the studio.

“It’s wonderful to see so many different cultures. Everyone comes together regardless of culture or religion.”

She speaks about the studio as a safe space — somewhere people can feel comfortable, respected and uplifted. That sense of belonging matters deeply to her.

Why She Stays

After 14 years, Shivani is still here — and thriving.

“I really appreciate all the effort you go to. The staff are so dedicated. They politely help me with my technique and alignment. They are always happy — and that makes a huge difference.”

She values precision. She notices the attention to detail.

“Instructors are particular with the movements — and then you see the results.”

This isn’t a short-term fix for her. It’s her lifestyle.

Sharing the Gift

As a practitioner herself, Shivani regularly recommends Pilates to her patients — particularly those navigating menopause or chronic conditions.

“I tell them — this is what I’ve experienced. You should absolutely join.”

She’s encouraged friends, patients — even her hairdresser — to come and try.

“Words are not enough. Just try yourself.”

Shivani, you are resilience in action. You are consistency. You are quiet strength.

Thank you for trusting us with your health for the past 14 years, and for being such a steady, generous presence in our community.

You truly embody the Inna Spirit.
