Meet Laurie – Our Inna Spirit Member of the Month for April

Some members walk into the studio and quietly become part of the fabric of the space. Others arrive with a presence that lifts everyone around them.

Laurie does both.

Described by the team as resilient, kind, consistent, and deeply engaged, Laurie embodies what it means to live the Inna Essence spirit—showing up not just for his physical health, but for his mental wellbeing, connection, and joy.

As our Yoga Teacher Silke so perfectly puts it, despite significant health challenges and setbacks, Laurie continues to meet life with positivity and resilience. And not only that—he inspires those teaching him to rise higher too.

A Life Interrupted… and Rebuilt

In 2023, Laurie’s life took an unexpected and confronting turn.

What he thought would be a short hospital stay turned into two months of battling chronic gallstone-induced pancreatitis. During that time, he lost half his body weight and a significant amount of muscle mass.

For someone who had always lived a strong, physically vibrant life, the impact wasn’t just physical—it was deeply emotional.

“It was crushing on my spirit,” he shares.

Even after leaving hospital, the challenges didn’t stop. Ongoing flare-ups, pain, and instability made work difficult and life unpredictable.

So Laurie did what many do—he turned to the gym to rebuild.  But something was missing.

From Isolation to Connection

“The gym is quite solo… quite lonely. It wasn’t nourishing my spirit.”

Then, in November 2025, something shifted.  Laurie came across an Inna Essence Facebook post about a 3 Week Trial. What started as a simple idea—“I’ll treat it like a retreat and go to a few Yoga classes”—quickly became something much more meaningful.

From the moment he walked through the doors, something clicked.  Meeting Andrea and Anna, seeing the immaculate space, and stepping into his first class—he felt it immediately:

“I knew straight away… I felt at home.”

Discovering Strength in New Ways

Laurie didn’t just dip his toe in—he immersed himself fully.  From Yoga to Reformer Pilates to Barre, he explored it all.  And Barre? That was a revelation.

“A leg workout unlike anything from the gym… I was reaching the point of failure in every class.”

But what truly stood out to Laurie wasn’t just the physical challenge—it was the variety, the skill of the instructors, and the constant opportunity to learn.

“At my age, I want to keep hitting my edge… that’s how I navigate ageing.”

Now, Laurie attends over 20 classes each week.  Not out of obligation. Out of passion.

More Than Movement

What makes Inna Essence different for Laurie isn’t just the programming of the classes; it’s the people.

“The gym is isolated… but at Inna Essence, people say hello. They ask where you’ve been. You’re part of a community.”

That sense of connection has been just as powerful as the physical transformation.

“There’s a lack of ego… just regular people being really caring to each other.”

Strength, Stability… and Space

Since joining Inna Essence, Laurie has experienced profound changes—not just in his body, but in how he moves through life.  Pilates has given him strength, stability, and a deep awareness of his core.

“I walk out feeling powerful, steady, and like I can go anywhere.”

Yoga, on the other hand, offers something completely different.

“I go into a Yoga class feeling like earth… and leave feeling like water. Spacious.”

That balance—effort and ease, strength and surrender—is something Laurie has embraced fully.

The Power of Challenge

Laurie thrives on being challenged.  “Life can throw really big things at you. Classes throw bite-sized challenges.”

And in those moments of challenge, something important happens:

“You feel encouraged and supported during the struggle.”

It’s that environment, where effort is celebrated and support is constant, that keeps him coming back.

A True Connection to the Practice

Laurie has now completed over 100 classes with Yoga teacher Silke, whose teaching style resonates deeply with his previous yoga experience.  He speaks with genuine appreciation for the preparation, care, and creativity that goes into every class.

But it’s not just one instructor. Laurie values the entire team, the diversity of styles, and the opportunity to keep discovering what works for him.

Why He Keeps Showing Up

“I just love it… I’m having a blast.”

Simple. Honest. True.

And when he can’t make it in?

“I really miss the studio.”

That says everything.

Laurie’s Advice to New Members

If you’re feeling unsure about starting, Laurie offers this: “Be curious. You’re on an exploratory mission.”

Not every class will feel like “your” class—and that’s okay.

“There’s such a variety… something will click for you.”

And when it does, you’ll know.

“You leave Pilates thinking, ‘what’s next?’
You leave Yoga feeling, ‘I’m complete.’”

A Well-Deserved Recognition

Laurie, you are an absolute joy to have in the studio.

Your resilience, openness, and genuine appreciation for the practice and community do not go unnoticed. You remind us all why we do what we do.

We’re so grateful you found us—and even more grateful you stayed.
